Reiki healing in the light of Islam

Assalam oalaikum,

There seems to be a general belief that the technique of reiki has been developed in Japan. The origin of reiki has been supposedly traced back to 1922, when Mikao Usui (Usui Sensei) had apparently founded the Reiki System of Healing. He had established an institute, where the reiki cure was instructed openly to the public and the treatment was given also.

However, a close scrutiny of history reveals that the science and technique of reiki was originally granted to our Dear Prophet (s.aw) by Allah Ta’ala.

The fatwas passed by some muftis has added to the. They have regarded reiki to be a sin in Islam because of symbols of dubious origins that are employed in the healing process.

However, the reiki that is practiced by hands is not a sin in Islam.

Allah ta’ala says in the Holy Quran:

49"And (appoint him) an apostle to the Children of Israel, (with this message): "'I have come to you, with a Sign from your Lord, in that I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allah.s leave: And I heal those born blind, and the lepers, and I quicken the dead, by Allah.s leave; and I declare to you what ye eat, and what ye store in your houses. Surely therein is a Sign for you if ye did believe;

surah emran verse number 49

110Then will Allah say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Recount My favour to thee and to thy mother. Behold! I strengthened thee with the holy spirit, so that thou didst speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. Behold! I taught thee the Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel and behold! thou makest out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My leave, and thou breathest into it and it becometh a bird by My leave, and thou healest those born blind, and the lepers, by My leave. And behold! thou bringest forth the dead by My leave. And behold! I did restrain the Children of Israel from (violence to) thee when thou didst show them the clear Signs, and the unbelievers among them said: 'This is nothing but evident magic.'

These verses prove that the knowledge of reiki had been imparted by Allah to Hazrat Isa alay salam. Here is a video in which Mufti sahib has discussed the reiki healing done by Hazrat Isa Alay salam.

Hence, we can conclude that reiki is not prohibited in Islam. The reason why some muftis have issued a fatwa against it is because of the use of reiki symbols. Inshallah, I shall clear the air about those symbols in this blog of mine.

what is reiki healing?

Reiki is a Japanese technique of relaxation and stress reduction that is also being used as an alternative healing therapy. It is a natural and safe method of healing as it does not have any side-effects. Reiki has a spiritual dimension to it. Etymologically speaking, the word reiki means ‘spiritually guided life force energy’. It is a particular type of subtle energy work in which healing is done by the touch of the hands that allows the flow of energy from the God Force to the patient through the Reiki practitioner. There is a plethora of benefits of reiki. Reiki provides means to balance the human energy fields or auras and energy centers or chakras to create the conditions required for the body’s healing system to function properly. As a matter of fact, when we are relaxed and de-stressed we are able to restore our natural ability to heal.
Long-term practice of whole-body reiki can open the energy channels and this will help the body to tackle stress, build-up toxins, anxiety and depression.
Reiki also provides with additional energy needed to recuperate from illness.

how is reiki healing done?

The human body has a unique self-healing mechanism. As we are aware of, we do not exist in this universe in an isolated way. Instead, we are a part of an inter-connected cosmos. Our energy systems are connected with the entire energies in the Universe. Our energy systems act as a link between the physical world and the spiritual/metaphysical world. However, sometimes our energy systems get blocked or contaminated at some places. Reiki is helpful at such times because it is an alternative healing therapy that utilizes the cosmic energy for healing. The main aim of Reiki is to bring the body into a perfect balance so that its self-healing mechanism gets restored. The reiki healers are attuned to be a channel for reiki and the Life energy flows through them. The different symbols used in reiki help in quickly connecting the recipient to the universal life force.
The Reiki practitioner does not give his own energy to the recipient. Instead, he serves as a medium for the healing energy from the universe to flow through him. Reiki works on the physical, mental; emotional and spiritual level. It can cure physical pain, eliminate mental and emotional blockages and restore spiritual equilibrium.

Reiki healing symbols

Reiki Symbols are taught to the reiki healers at level two or second degree reiki. These symbols are Sanskrit-derived Japanese forms that can strengthen reiki treatment sessions by enhancing the flow of Life Force. The reiki symbols are given below.

how are the reiki symbols used during therapy sessions?

The reiki symbols are activated by the reiki practitioners through different methods such as:
By drawing them with the palm centre, finger or the third eye.
By visualizing them
By spelling out the symbol’s name thrice.
After the symbols have got activated the practitioner may then either re-draw or visualize the symbol on the recipients/ clients chakra, specific areas to be treated or the palms. Watch this video.

muftis do not approve of reiki symbols

Assalam oalaikum,

Muftis have issued a fatwa against reiki. Reiki healing is based on the belief that universal life force energy runs through every living being and it has a healing power. By believing so, one is attributing the authority of this universe to some other power than Allah. Allah ta’ala says, “And whatever you have of favor, it is from Allah. Qur'an 16:53]. Another verse reads Say, "Then have you considered what you invoke besides Allah? If Allah intended me harm, are they removers of His harm; or if He intended me mercy, are they withholders of His Mercy?" [Qur'an 39:38].

Moreover, it is definite that the reiki practitioner uses pagan rites to make the so-called 'Universal life force energy' flow through the body of the recipient. The recipeint may also be instructed to perform some of these pagan rites.

Hence, instead of using such a doubtful therapy why not read the Holy Quran instead? Allah says, “We sent down in the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe: to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss.

(Quran: Al-Isra/ Bani Israeel - Chapter 17 Verse 82)
